Starting Judo
New to Judo
Starting a new sport can feel daunting, especially when you are joining a new group for the first time. At Ringwood Judo Club, we do everything we can to make new members feel welcome from the moment they arrive.
We are a friendly club with children, teens and adults of different ages, abilities and experience levels. Some members train for fitness. Some enjoy learning new skills. Some work towards gradings. Some compete. Others simply enjoy being part of the club.
You do not need to compete to enjoy judo.
If your main goal is to build confidence, improve fitness, learn self-defence or try something new, that is absolutely fine. Judo is for everyone, and our coaches will help you train at a level that suits you.
More players on the mat means more people to train with, more friendships and more fun.

Your First Session
Your first session is a free trial.
For your first visit, you do not need to own a judo suit. We can usually lend you a judo jacket, called a judogi, so you can try the session properly.
Please wear:
— Tracksuit bottoms or comfortable sports trousers
— A T-shirt (optional)
— No clothing with zips, buttons or hard parts
— A bottle of water
When you arrive, please introduce yourself to one of the coaches. We will help you get set up, explain what to do and make sure you feel comfortable before joining the session.
Training Safely
Judo is practised barefoot on the mat, so clean feet and trimmed toenails are important. This helps keep the mat clean and reduces the chance of scratching your training partners.
Please also remove jewellery, watches and anything sharp before training.
If you have any allergies, medical conditions, injuries, physical disabilities or a preferred learning style, please let us know. We will do our best to adapt the session and support you properly.
Children Starting Judo
Children are very welcome at Ringwood Judo Club, and all of our children’s sessions are suitable for beginners.
For younger children, especially those attending for the first time, we ask that a parent or guardian stays during the session. There is a seating area at the club where you can watch.
We normally have at least two coaches on the mat, which helps us support new beginners and make sure children are learning safely.
Children will start with the basics, including movement, balance, safe falling, simple techniques and judo games. The aim is to build confidence while keeping the session fun and structured.
Adults Starting Judo
Adults are welcome whether you are completely new to judo, returning after many years away or looking for a new way to improve fitness.
You do not need to be fit before you start. Judo helps you build fitness over time.
For adult beginners, Wednesday evening is often the best first session. This session focuses more on judo fundamentals, breakfalls, basic techniques and breaking things down clearly. It gives new starters a better chance to understand the basics before joining more randori-focused training.
What If I’m Nervous?
That is completely normal.
Many people feel nervous before their first session, especially adults starting something new. You will not be thrown straight into anything you are not ready for.
Our coaches will explain things step by step. You can work at your own pace, ask questions and take breaks when needed.
The hardest part is usually walking through the door for the first time.
Session Costs
Sessions are £5 per person.
Payment can be made by cash or card.
You can borrow a judo jacket for your first few sessions. Once you are sure you want to continue with judo, speak to one of the coaches about buying your own judo suit.
Approximate judo suit costs:
— Children’s judo suits usually start from £15 to £30, depending on size
— Adult judo suits usually start from around £50, depending on size and quality
Once you decide to continue with judo, you will need a judo licence through the judo association.
A licence costs around £45 per year and allows you to train as a registered Judoka, take part in gradings and enter competitions if you wish to.
Ready to Give Judo a Try?
The best way to see if judo is right for you or your child is to come along and try a session.
You will be made welcome, supported by our coaches and introduced to the basics in a safe and friendly environment.
Come and join us on the mat.
